This month’s speaker is Luis Resendez, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Born in San Bernardino and have lived in the Inland Empire for most of my life. He attended high school in San Bernardino and graduated from both San Bernardino Valley College and Cal State San Bernardino (B.A., Criminal Justice). He began his mental health career as a residential counselor at a boy’s home in the eastern San Gabriel Valley in 2004. A year later he took a position as an in-home behavior specialist for an agency based in Los Angeles County. He entered a Marriage and Family Therapy Master’s program at Pacific Oaks College in 2006. During my course of study, he began a yearlong graduate student internship at a community based mental health clinic in Covina, providing therapy services to children, adults, and groups.
After obtaining his Master’s degree in 2010, a began full-time work as a community-based therapist for an intensive outpatient (Full Service Partnership) program in the Highland Park region of Los Angeles. In 2012 he returned to the eastern San Gabriel Valley to start a gardening based group therapy program for a public mental health agency in Pomona. In 2015 he passed the California state licensing exam and became a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
Throughout my more than twelve years as a mental health service provider, he has been exposed firsthand to many facets of distress among adults, children, and families. Everyday life in our professional and personal lives brings about the stress that is often difficult to manage or cope with. This stress can affect a person’s ability to perform at work, maintain his/her studies, or impair interaction with family and friends. Because of the stigma surrounding therapy and mental health-related work, many individuals do not seek any type of counseling services but are still left to suffer from stress that at times can seem insurmountable. My approach with clients involves being warm, honest, supportive, and genuine. He takes a lighthearted approach that allows a client to feel more comfortable in therapy and subsequently being able to share the concerns that brought him/her here in the first place.
He believes that healing is a journey, not a destination.
